What we do

Ruby on Rails
specialists, end to end.

Refaktory is a focused Ruby on Rails consultancy. We don't dabble in fifteen frameworks — we go deep on Rails and the surrounding ecosystem so that the software we deliver is built to be maintained, not just shipped.

What we build

Custom Ruby on Rails applications

Greenfield Rails apps for government, scale-ups and complex B2B platforms — designed to scale, instrumented from day one and built around an API-first architecture when you need it.

Legacy modernisation

We have migrated Rails 4 and Rails 5 codebases up to current Rails. If your application has accumulated technical debt, we have seen worse — and we have a track record of getting them current without freezing feature work.

API design and integration

REST and GraphQL APIs designed for long-lived integrations, with a clear versioning story and the documentation a partner team can actually work from.

DevOps and infrastructure

Containerised deployments, observability, CI/CD pipelines and the day-two operational discipline that keeps a Rails application healthy across years of change.

Long-term maintenance

Several of our clients have worked with us for 5+ years. We treat maintenance as a discipline of its own — security updates, framework upgrades, performance work and steady incremental improvements.

Technical depth

How we work, technically

Rails is our tool of choice — not because it's trendy, but because it ages well. The stack we reach for around it is small and deliberate, chosen so that handing the codebase over to your own team is straightforward whenever you want to.

  • Ruby on Rails (current major), with a Hotwire / Turbo / Stimulus front end where SPA complexity isn't justified.
  • PostgreSQL as the system of record, with Sidekiq for background work and Redis for caching.
  • Test coverage with Minitest or RSpec, plus integration tests against a real database — never mocked.
  • Containerised deployment to AWS or a customer-preferred cloud, with infrastructure described as code.
  • Structured observability — logs, metrics, traces — wired in from the first deploy.

Where we work

Sectors we know

Government and public sector

Long-running engagements with Belgian and EU institutions. Procurement, accessibility, multilingual delivery and audit-ready documentation are part of how we work, not optional extras.

Scale-ups and B2B platforms

Rails applications under real load, often with a multi-tenant model, custom integrations and a roadmap that needs to keep moving while the platform stays stable.

Cultural and education sector

Software for institutions where the user base is broad, the editorial workflow matters and the application has to last across staffing changes and budget cycles.
